In the United States, the incidence rate (4.2 new cases per 100,000 person-years) and death rate (4.1 deaths per 100,000 person-years) for esophageal cancer are nearly identical, indicative of the aggressive nature of the disease and the advanced stage at which most patients present.1–3 Indeed, based on data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Database, the 5-year overall survival rate for all esophageal cancer is a mere 18.8%, and 39% of patients have distant metastasis at the time of diagnosis.3 These statistics highlight the need to optimize the care of these patients through a thorough understanding of the anatomy, pathophysiology, staging, and treatment of esophageal cancer.
