Y1 - 2018 N1 - T2 - Atlas of Minimally Invasive Surgical Operations AB - Video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) is a general term used to describe operations on the thorax accomplished with the use of a video camera, monitor, and long instruments. This approach using only a thoracoscope was originally described in 1910, but had limited application due to poor visibility. With the advent of high resolution cameras and monitors it has been increasingly applied over the last 10 to 20 years to operations traditionally performed through a thoracotomy. VATS is now commonly used to treat diseases of the lung, pleura and mediastinum.
