TY - CHAP M1 - Book, Section TI - Postrenal Transplant: Neurological Complications A1 - Najjar, Salem A1 - Kirsch, Claudia FE A1 - Najjar, Souhel A2 - Molmenti, Ernesto Pompeo PY - 2023 T2 - Molmenti’s Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation: Operative Techniques and Medical Management, 2e AB - Renal transplants are among the most common solid organ transplants with a steady rise in their numbers, particularly over the recent years.1 Some reports suggest that about 9 out 10 transplant recipients experience some form of neurological symptoms.2 Other reports indicate that 30–60% of postrenal transplant individuals may develop some neurological complications,3 with an estimated prevalence rate of 8%.4 The central neurological complications may have similar clinical presentations despite their diverse etiologies. Further, these complications are frequently associated with a higher rate of morbidity and mortality. Thus, early recognition and treatment can prevent or limit life-threatening sequelae associated with these complications and optimize the clinical outcome.4,5 In this chapter we review the central and peripheral neurological complications following renal transplant, including those related to immunosuppressants.
