GENERAL HEAD AND NECK SURGERY TIPS

There is a risk of recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury when operating in the neck

  • - Unilateral injury results in weak/breathy voice

  • - Bilateral injury can result in upper airway obstruction

If you are given a patient with history of prior neck surgery who needs to undergo another neck surgery (ie, thyroidectomy, parathyroidectomy, etc), obtain preoperative flexible laryngoscopy to ensure the RLNs are intact bilaterally.
