For this 12th edition, I want to thank our two editors, Dr. Yvonne Chan and Dr. John Goddard, who have done a tremendous job. Particularly, I would like to thank the one person who has been by my side, even before the appearance of the very first edition of this book in 1973—my lovely and devoted wife of 53 years, Linda. Our three sons, Ken, Lloyd and Mark, used to help with editorial assistance, but are now busy with their respective professions, law, private equity and media consultant; Jeannie Grenier, my nurse for over 35 years and editorial associate, worked hard on previous editions. I thank the McGraw-Hill staff for their diligence, great work, and congeniality.

I thank my parents for the gene and nurturing environment that allowed me to develop a passion for hard work, a sense for organization, and an ability to distill complex materials into simple facts. These are the three cornerstones that have shaped this book from the first edition. I am thrilled to see these traits are also inherent in Yvonne and John.

And to those newcomers at the frontiers of medical science who have contributed greatly to this edition, I also extend my thanks for taking the time to share their own expertise and, in doing so, helping to keep this book up-to-date.

We are so proud of Yvonne and John.

—K. J. Lee

I would like to thank the many authors who volunteered their time and expertise to help make this book possible. I am indebted to my talented co-editor Dr. John Goddard for his organizational mastery to keep us on track through the planning and editing process. I am so grateful to my mentor Dr. K. J. Lee for his ongoing guidance and support over the years as well as his belief in me to work alongside him on so many projects. It is indeed a great honor to be part of the legacy that is “KJ Lee’s Essential Otolaryngology.” Last but not least, I would like to thank my family, especially my parents, Dexter and Phoebe, without their love and support, I would not be who I am today.

—Yvonne Chan

Serving as co-editor of “KJ Lee’s Essential Otolaryngology” has been a source of great pride. I am grateful to be able to work alongside such an accomplished clinician as Dr. Yvonne Chan and am thankful for her partnership. The guidance provided directly by Dr. Lee has been invaluable and it is a special honor to participate in the work that has meant so much to him. I would like to thank my wife, Emily, and our two sons, Henry and Luke, for their encouragement and support in my work as co-editor.

—John C. Goddard
